A Word about James Cameron’s Avatar

I want to take a break from talking about recruiting, human resources and marketing for a bit. Recently, I have been following the developments of a fairly large film project throughout the past year. James Cameron’s Avatar has been in development for over 15 years. Started off as an idea, it was shelved for 10 years because the technology could not catch up to a very ambitious film maker’s vision. 10 years later with a budget close to $400M (which includes marketing costs) a film is born that I believe WILL revolutionize the film industry. Why? Revolutionary 3D technology, a film director who finally understands how to write and direct quality films, and lastly, a storyline with strong characters in which the audience can relate to and actually feel sympathy and care for.

I am always intrigued (from a business viewpoint) on how James Cameron directs, writes and produces his own movies. I’ve been watching his interviews on youtube and I am fascinated on how hard it takes to please a man of this stature. This man has a vision, a goal in mind and needs good creative vendors/partners to carry out his dream.  He talks about how hard it was to find good partners to re-create his vision. Partners that are passionate in carrying out a filmmaker’s vision, idea and world rather than talking about partners who are only interested in market share and licensing deals.  Avatar is released on December 18, 2009.
